Release Date: December 17, 2009
Release Number: HQ-09-155

WASHINGTON - With the New Year approaching, the Department of Homeland Securitys Federal Emergency Management Agencys (FEMA) Ready Campaign is reminding Americans to Resolve to be Ready in 2010. Resolve to be Ready is an annual initiative encouraging individuals, families, businesses and communities to make preparedness a part of their New Year resolutions.

This holiday season, as family and friends come together to celebrate, it is also a great time to talk about the importance of being prepared, said Administrator Fugate. Families can start small, by ensuring they have a communications plan in place before an emergency happens, a little bit of planning can make all the difference in an emergency. The public is the most critical member of our national emergency response team, and the more they do now to be prepared, the better our response.

Being Ready for emergencies can be an easy New Year's resolution to keep by following the Ready Campaign's three simple steps: 1) Get an emergency supply kit; 2) Make a family emergency plan; and 3) Be informed about the types of emergencies and appropriate responses.

Taking these steps and having an emergency supply kit both at home and in the car, will help prepare people for winter power outages and icy roads. Each of these kits should include basic necessities such as water, food and first aid supplies to help you survive if you are without power or become stranded in your vehicle. Complete checklists for each kit are available at www.ready.gov.

In addition, by visiting www.ready.gov or the Spanish-language Web site www.listo.gov, or calling 1-800-BE-READY or 1-888-SE-LISTO, individuals can access free materials that will help them make and keep a New Year's resolution that will bring their families peace of mind. The Ready campaign has been produced in partnership with the Ad Council.

FEMAs mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.

FEMA though, is always speaking about this kind of thing.
However, I am seeing a whole host of "resolve to be ready " messages everywhere these days it seems.

Haystackneedle, congrats on going green! http://www.aspsystems.fi/wtf/images/smileys/emo-008.gif good choice, mainly because I saw you list Mark Helprin as a favorite author and anybody who can appreciate his work is alright.

Thanks Brio, I appreciate it.
I endeavor now to crawl out of my shell more.
Yes, I remember that thread, I would like to revisit some Helprin and " Soldier of the Great War " is one of my all time favorites.
I am also remiss on re reading some Abbey who I enjoy tremendously.
Also, Green Mountain Boy has a blog or something with a great list of his favorite stuff that I remember bookmarking from one of those discussions.
Sorry for the off topic-ness on BB's thread.

I will add though.
Hey BB,
the last few years, with FEMA money, Florida has installed approximately 50 " Special Needs " shelters throughout the state.
Special needs being " in case of emergency" you must be brought there and not be able to come on your own accord....i.e wheelchair bound etc etc..
Well, I thouhgt they were interesting in that they had / have a Central Warehouse in Orlando to service all of them.
Filled to the gills with supplies a lot of which are medical.
( I found a pdf of the supplies on the net through a state portal )
I still believe that they are not just for " hurricane" relief.
Iffen ya know what I mean.
Regards,
Haystackneedle

'Being ready' is pretty good advice no matter who, when or where you are, conspiracy theories aside. In winter I don't drive anywhere without boots, gloves and heavy jacket in the vehicle, first aid kit, tow rope and a bit of cash.

FEMA is an organization of multiple personalities.

On one hand, they have credibly-reported plans to take over America during a "crisis." Many believe this would include concentration camps.

On the other hand, FEMA promotes self-reliance, which would enable people to avoid the need to ask or demand "help" from FEMA during a crisis. (and enable people to resist any sort of "mandatory" evacuations)

I fully support the "Ready" campaigns they do. The recommendations are sound. Admittedly, most won't listen, and will plea to FEMA for help if there is a disaster. Maybe, FEMA is right in planning concentration camps for cattle too stupid to make even minimal preparations. I'm only half joking. Look at New Orleans. Despite the obviously fascist actions of some elements of the "authorities" during Katrina, there were tens of thousands of morons who would have simply died were it not for herculean efforts of FEMA, et. al., to house them in the Dome, and elsewhere.

Now that it's been 'officially' announced by the government... please feel free to discuss the topic with the masses as it's not become acceptable and green-lighted... :)

Can't wait to hear the deep thoughts of the hordes of bandwagon idiots who join the bandwagon starting today...

It's ironic, isn't it?
